Information about PBISAz grant

The purpose of the grant is to support the participation of education agencies in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports of Arizona (PBISAz) project, a collaborative effort between the Arizona Department of Education, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona along wit support from the National Center for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Formally known as the Arizona Behavioral Initiative or ABI, the goal of PBISAz is to provide educators, administrators and other education professionals with ongoing professional development and support to enable schools to create safe, positive, teaching and learning environments for all children and teachers.

Funds are provided through the Creating Disciplined Schools Grant over a period of two years, and schools are encouraged to reapply for the grant for an optional second two-year term. Grants that receive federal funds require a Completion Report to be filed annually with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) within 90 calendar days after the completion of each grant year as well as regular quarterly reports with with PBISAz group during the school year.

What are PBISAz funds used to support?

  • Participation in the PBISAz conferences, which features a minimum of four two-day trainings commitment for a leadership team representative of the school's staff, district team, and parents.
  • Support for the activities necessary to develop effective teams and apply positive behavior support strategies. Examples of eligible activities are professional staff development, social skills building, parent involvement, and behavioral health or other services that involve other social services agencies.
  • Collection and interpretation of office referrals and other data prior to making decisions on school-wide and individual discipline practices. .
  • Tuition for a minimum of five recommended online university courses (pre-service) over the two-year grant period and agency-sponsored professional development or staff training (in-service).
